Dan has hosted and performed at clinics and jazz workshops both in the USA and in Europe. A short list would include:

The Mile-High Jazz Festival in Denver, CO;
the Jazzin' July Workshop in the Netherlands;

clinics and concerts with traditional jazz bands at Brigham Young University

and--years ago--clinics sponsored by the Triangle Jazz Party in Kingsport, TN and Raleigh, NC.

Dan is especially excited about the new Chautauqua Traditional Jazz Workshop, to take place in September, 2012 (Please see column at left).
"Passing the torch," and keeping the jazz flame lighted is very important to Dan. He remembers the many older players who were so generous with their knowledge, and who helped and influenced him in his early years.

In the spirit of "passing it along," Dan tries to make himself available to serious younger players, and takes part in clinics and jazz workshops as much as his schedule allows.

SEPT 16-20, 2012

Dan is pleased to announce he has recently been named Musical Director of the new Chautauqua Traditional Jazz Workshop, which will take place next autumn at (and around) the Hotel Athenaeum, on Lake Chautauqua in beautiful upstate New York.  The Hotel itself will produce what is hoped will be an annual event, taking place immediately before the established Jazz at Chautauqua Jazz Party, Sept 20-23 2012.

The Chautauqua Traditional Jazz Workshop's teaching staff includes:

The focus of the Workshop will be on collective improvisation, an important aspect of jazz performance that is--for whatever reason--rarely addressed in high school and college jazz programs.

The Workshop is intended for all ages, and all ranges of ability. The format is simple: classes during the day, and loose "jam sessions' in the evening, and all within the beautiful grounds of the Chautauqua Institution on Lake Chautauqua!  This special Workshop should prove to be a fun adjunct to the already-successful Jazz at Chautauqua Jazz Party.

JULY 2-8, 2012

Another highlight of Dan's year is the Jazzin' July Workshop. The JJW is produced by Dan's long-time friend, Frank Roberscheuten (RO-bare-shoy-tin). Frank, who lives in Belgium, is one of Europe's leading reed men, and one of Dan's favorites.  His successful JJW provides the template for the "sister" Workshop in Chautauqua.

The Jazzin' July Workshop is held annually at the state-of-the-art Golden Tulip Jagershorst Hotel--in the Leenderbos woods, near Eindhoven, in the Netherlands!

Frank's teaching staff includes six of Europe's leading jazz players, plus: Dave Green, England's leading bassist; two Americans (Dan and guitarist Howard Alden); and Shaunette Hildebrand, the JJW's vocal instructor.
